This major event undoubtedly constitutes a showcase for the Algerian digital ecosystem which has become, in recent years, one of the African references in terms of digital penetration. With an internet penetration rate that exceeds 70%, accompanied by a speed that is constantly improving from year to year. Mobile teledensity is more than 107%, Algeria is ranked in the top 30 in the world as having the lowest mobile Internet consumption cost in Africa with a rate of $0.48 USD per GB. Elsewhere, online payment has literally exploded with a number of transactions increasing by 95% in 2022. Its turnover has jumped to more than 16 billion DA, an increase of 3,200% compared to that of before the Covid pandemic.
A dynamic ecosystem
In a dynamic of digital transformation, Algeria appears with several advantages. In addition to a well-developed infrastructure, with a wide range of quality telecom services and internet connectivity, the country is an attractive market with more than 46 million inhabitants, in addition to a skilled workforce, with many trained and experienced professionals in the fields of IT, telecommunications and digital technologies. To support this dynamic, the country is working to establish a legal framework, through the adoption of the Startup Act in particular, the creation of an investment fund of 10 million euros intended to support, near of 3,000 startups identified nationally, as well as an investment fund of 1.2 billion Algerian dinars (€10 million) intended to finance innovative companies.
“Africa has a great need for Algerian technology in terms of digitalization”
The actors do not hide it, Algeria must be the locomotive of African digital integration. During the 2022 edition of the Digital African Summit, the Minister of Digitization and Statistics, Hocine Cherhabil, already insisted on the need for African countries to strengthen integration in the digital field and Algeria was already willing to play this role of locomotive.
“It is important to continue the African integration process, particularly through the entry into force of the AfCFTA. These include the trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone project linking Algeria to Nigeria, which will contribute to the development of digitalization on the continent,” the minister indicated.
In this sense, Egypt and Algeria have decided to install two new submarine cables which will strengthen connectivity between Egypt and Algeria, with operation planned from 2025. These submarine cables will allow both countries to access a high-speed network in an optimal manner, with the prospect of four direct cable connections. In the same vein, a fiber optic link program between Algeria and Nigeria is very advanced.
