Kono Digital, an African startup specializing in the design of “Made in Africa” UAVs, provides services making this technological tool available to the region’s farmers.

The issue

Address, through technological tools, the challenges of African agriculture,

including poor yields and food insecurity; improving production quality; preserving the environment; the need to curb down rural exodus.

The solution

The use of drones to increase productivity and quality production.

« We are looking forward to increase the farmers’ yields using technological tools, especially drones, » said Moussa YARBANGA, Manager of Kono Digital. UAVs designed locally and used for spreading, irrigation, mapping, and, especially, training pilots, maintenance workers and specialists in UAV-assisted aerospace remote sensing.

In addition, the restitution of UAV-made images and the acquisition of information for the benefit of agronomists, researchers, farmers, environmentalists and decision-makers are very useful forecasting tools. Finally, as part of the implementation of its technical assistance project for the producers in fighting against crop attacks and phytosanitary diseases, Kono Digital has started a cycle of training courses for young people in rural areas, through agreements with agricultural schools and training centers. The start-up is seeking to give young people, who have already a good expertise of basic agriculture, additional certified vocational training in the areas of technology and drone handling.

The stakeholders

Moussa YARBANGA, aerospace remote sensing engineer from Burkina Faso.

The impact

Creation of 320 direct jobs.

Kono Digital responds to youth unemployment in rural areas by creating, in its first phase, 320 direct jobs, thus vindicating its contribution to fight against rural exodus. A training program has already been deployed in 3 countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal.

Digital Africa's perspective

Kono is an extremely-promising project that demonstrates the role of technology in supporting the real economy in Africa. Moreover, beyond agriculture, the start-up is meeting other health and ecological challenges, as Moussa Yarbanga has also been requested, by authorities, schools and universities from Burkina Faso, to disinfect waste storage areas and to counter the spread of malaria and fight against the COVID-19. One technology, several and strategic applications: in our view, this is definitely a solution for the future!
